很多同学私信问我：“老师，我背了那么多词汇，为什么口语还是上不去？”今天我想说句掏心窝的话：不是你的词汇量不够，而是你会用的词太少。

上周我带的一个学生，雅思口语考试抽到了“Describe a city you want to visit”这个话题。她开口就是："I want to go to a big city, it has many buildings and people..."

你们发现问题了没有？big city、buildings、people——这些词太泛了，就像方便面调料包冲出来的汤，淡而无味。考官每天听到的都是这些，你想拿高分？那真是见鬼了。

真正的高分答案长什么样？

让我给你们看一个7.5分的回答示范：

"I grew up in a municipality on the outskirts of Shanghai. It wasn't exactly a metropolis like the downtown area, but it had this charming balance between urban convenience and residential tranquility. Every weekend, my family would head to the shopping centre near our flat to do grocery shopping, and I'd always beg my parents to stop by the newsstand to grab the latest comic books."

看到区别了吗？outskirts、municipality、residential、shopping centre、flat、newsstand——每一个词都恰到好处，每一个词都能让考官看出你的语言功底。

1. 地理类词汇：让你的定位更精准

- metropolis vs city：metropolis带有“大都市”的宏伟感，适合描述北上广深

- municipality：市政当局，也是“市级”的意思，比city更正式

- outskirts vs suburb：outskirts指城市边缘地带，suburb通常指近郊住宅区
